ABOUT CO-OP
How do you become the parent you really want to be?
What is empathy and how does it help your kid's brain to thrive? How do you create limits and safety for your child without power struggles and disconnection?

The Art Zone is pleased to offer Friday Morning Co-op to create a place of community learning and practice around parenting skills.  Join us at co-op class as we build our parenting skills together and create a community of support for the most important job on earth.

Laura Krug facilitates this class, based on the work of Ruth Beaglehole, founder of the Center for Nonviolent Education and Parenting, a nonprofit parenting education organization. The Art Zone has integrated Beaglehole's groundbreaking work in early childhood into all the programs at the studio.

The term "nonviolence" describes a commitment to treat oneself and others with deep respect. It is a belief in the basic goodness that exists in all living things. Nonviolence is an all-encompassing perspective. It includes our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. What we think and say matter.

The philosophy and practice of nonviolence in parenting applies the ideas of nonviolence to the relationship between children and the adults responsible for raising them. Drawing from over four decades of research on parenting approaches, child development and brain development, CNVEP's philosophy is based on empathy, connection and compassion in order to deepen adult-child relationships.  The adult-child connection allows the child to learn to be a caring and empathetic human being, fulfilling his or her own dreams and wishes, at the same time supporting the dreams and wishes of others. We are raising children with care. We are raising children to care.

Co-op Daily Schedule
Once your child has acclimated to class, you are welcome to drop off your child every-other week. Our goal is to build a community of parents; sharing the work of raising our children. This means taking every other week to take care of your needs away from your child, and using the alternate week to participate in the work at Art Zone. Parents are always welcome to stay every week and some do just that.

We have a relaxed morning of free play time, followed by a group time to say hello, read a story and demonstrate a project.  A teacher then leads a project at one table and children are welcome to investigate all the play options. At 12:00 we set up the lunch table and mostly sit together. Our parent discussions are informal. You are welcome to bring up a question for discussion and interested parents gather around to work out how the nonviolent philosophy frames the issue and forms our response. During the morning, we hope that we have a few conflicts between children to work out. This provides rich learning opportunities for us all.  Some of the favorite issues we discuss are toilet readiness, sibling issues, "whining", "not listening", sharing and manners, setting limits nonviolently, big feelings, and separation. All issues are an opportunity to understand feelings and needs, practice self-empathy, empathy for others and most importantly to deepen compassionate relationships.  After lunch, we investigate a science activity and then it is time to clean up and say our goodbye.
